Homeschool Recap: 2023/2024 Homeschool Curriculum Review

We wrapped up our 2023/2024 homeschool year this past week and I thought I would share the curriculum options we chose and how they worked out for us. I am very happy with how this school year went. Dare I say, it was the most academic progress I’ve seen in my children, since we began homeschooling over 6 years ago. Let’s get into the curriculum!

The Good and the Beautiful Language Arts High School 1 We have used TGTB for several years now and I knew going into this school year, that we would continue with their Language Arts curriculum. She really loved the structure of the curriculum verses previous levels from TGTB. She was able to build her own schedule at her own pace, which she really took on that responsibility very well. She liked how each day’s lessons weren’t all the same, she learned a variety of skills throughout each unit book. She also enjoyed the corresponding readers with her units. She ended up feeling stronger and more confident on writing and grammar skills. Highly recommend! We will be continuing this series into next school year.

The Good and the Beautiful Math & Language Arts Level 5 My son has become familiar with TGTB curriculum as well and this year he was challenged in the best way with his Level 5 curriculum. Math typically comes very easy to him, but this year he really had to focus and master some new skills. We will be continuing with TGTB next year for him as well.

The Good and the Beautiful History Year 2 & US Government and Constitution – We doubled down with History curriculum this year and enjoyed every second of it. We love TGTB History curriculum & cannot wait for the newer versions to come out. I’m actually sad that we can’t get year 3 for next year. Both of my kids used this curriculum with their grade level workbooks. They especially loved the government and constitution course! It was incredibly educational and engaging. You would think reading the entire constitution would be a snooze fest, but we looked forward to these lessons every day. I’d argue it’s TGTB best curriculum choice in my opinion.

** The Good and the Beautiful has discontinued the History Years 1-3 courses and are in the process of creating new versions of these curriculums, but the US Government and Constitution course is still available and is not being discontinued.**

Master Books Science Physical World This was my choice for my son’s science curriculum this year and while I think very highly of Master Books, this particular course didn’t work as well as we’d hoped for us. We ended up supplementing with other things. I felt it covered a such wide scope of grade levels and was quite difficult for my son to grasp. Although we didn’t complete it, I still stand by Master Books 100% and will continue to use other curriculum choices from them.

Master Books Advanced Premed – This was my daughter’s science course this year. She wants to be a nurse so this was a perfect choice to wet her feet into those studies. This curriculum was awesome, it definitely didn’t disappoint!! She absolutely loved it & learned SO much! Highly recommend this as well!

Master Books Answers in Genesis 1&2 – We used this for our Bible curriculum and taught it as a family. It was very educational and incredibly thorough. We ended up only completing book 1 this year, but it’s a great resource for anyone looking for an apologetics course.

Shormann Math Algebra 1 – Shormann (Dive into Math) Math was an absolute game changer for my daughter in math. She has always struggled in math, but this year was night and day difference! I cannot say enough good things about this course. It teaches in such a way that sparks confidence and motivation. The quality of resources provided to the students to practice and learn each skill is like no other math curriculum I’ve ever seen. We will continue with Shormann next year and years to come! Highly highly recommend!!

In summary, we had an excellent year with wonderful curriculum choices. Even if some of them didn’t work for us, they might be ideal for others. Remember that this is just our personal experience. That’s why it’s crucial for homeschooling parents to research and assess if something is effective, they should stick with it. If it’s not, it’s perfectly okay to make a change. I hope this information is useful and provides you with some valuable insight as you search for curriculum.

  1. Hi do u know why TGTB is discontinuing History 1-3? I hope it won’t turn woke like Abeka. You can see the reviews on the abeka page. I came across some post too on fb. As this was our 2nd year doing TGTB

    1. Hi there! They are discontinuing the History 1-3 because they are making new versions of their History curriculum. Release date is not yet been told. We loved TGTB History Years 1 and 2. We were unable to get Year 3 before they discontinued it.
